Abstract The use of computational simulation techniques is an important tool for the coffee harvesting issues, particularly the finite element method. The method is widely used in the structural analysis of agricultural machinery, as well as in the analysis of the stresses and vibrations of coffee branches and peduncles during the harvesting process. The present study aimed to develop three-dimensional finite element models of the plagiotropic branches of the Catuaí Vermelho variety of Arabica coffee in different positions along the orthotropic branches of the plant; considering high-fidelity models. Additionally, by considering the branches’ experimental properties (physical-mechanical), the natural frequencies and vibration modes of the branches were determined by means of computer simulations. First, the geometric properties of the coffee branches were obtained by means of two images taken using a professional camera to obtain the input data of the virtual simulation. For the mechanical properties, it was used a semi-analytical digital scale, to obtain the mass of the specimens. The modulus of elasticity was determined using a universal testing machine. The variability in the simulated natural frequencies could be identified, which was on the order of 30% for the first frequency, regardless of the position of the branch in the plant. These values were lower for the other frequencies. Linear regression fits showed a coefficient of determination, and correlation tests were used to verify the relationship between the values obtained numerically and experimentally, which were validated by using experimental data using the modal analysis techniques.

ABSTRACT Background: The Macaw palm ( Acrocomia aculeata) is a palm tree native to the Tropical America Forests. This palm has stood out due to its high potential for the production of oil for biofuels, being an excellent source of renewable energy. However, due to the rudimentary way of exploring the Macaw palm, mostly using native people labor, it is not possible to extract the maximum economical potential that this plant can provide. In order to use the Macaw palm in industrial scale, new strategies using high-performance machinery in several segments of the production chain should be employed. Results: For that, its seedlings production must be broadly expanded, using modern techniques for its propagation and production on an industrial scale, since its present low germination rates when the natural way is employed. In this way, the present paper has the objective of establishing a database of the mechanical properties of the endocarp of the Macaw palm when submitted to compression efforts, typically used for removing almonds from the endocarp. The inherent variability of its mechanical properties was quantified, using three different crops sites. Conclusion: Important information about the mechanical properties of the Macaw palm endocarp is presented, serving as guideline for future works to genetic improvement of the Macaw palm, in order to obtain fruits with less variability in the mechanical properties of the endocarp and consequently improve the production on an industrial scale.

ABSTRACT. The search for alternative energy sources has fomented the study of several crops. The macauba palm crop, for instance, has been highlighted because of its particular relevance in Brazil due to its wide distribution across Brazilian territory and its potential for yielding high amounts of oil per cultivated hectare. However, the species is still most commonly harvested via extractivism, which results in low yields. Therefore, we aimed to analyze the dynamic behavior of the fruit-rachilla system when subjected to mechanical vibration to gather baseline information for the subsequent development of macauba harvesting machines. The fruit-rachilla system of the species was modeled for different fruit maturation stages and plant accessions. Natural frequencies and modes of vibration were determined by the stochastic finite element method (FEM), adopting the specific mass and the modulus of elasticity of the system as random variables, which enabled us to compile a dataset of natural frequencies based on the variability of the system properties. The mean values of the natural frequencies obtained in the vibration assays were 26.02 Hz at the green maturation stage and 21.22 Hz at the ripe maturation stage. The mean values of natural frequencies found in the simulation by stochastic FEM, referring to the third mode of vibration, were 26.05 Hz at the green maturation stage and 21.23 Hz at the ripe maturation stage. We concluded that the natural frequencies of the macauba fruit-rachilla system on the basis of different plant accessions showed a decreasing behavior during fruit maturation. The modes of vibration characterized by pendulum displacement did not differ among plant accessions or between fruit maturation stages.

Resumen El desarrollo de máquinas eficientes para la cosecha de café requiere un conocimiento sólido sobre el comportamiento dinámico de la planta. La transmisibilidad de la vibración es un parámetro del comportamiento dinámico que puede ayudar a comprender este proceso. El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar la transmisibilidad de vibración promedio en muestras de rama de pedúnculo de fruta de café que contienen frutas inmaduras y maduras. Los experimentos se realizaron utilizando plantas de café Arábica "Catuaí Vermelho". Las muestras se sometieron a tres niveles de frecuencia de vibración, 20, 30 y 40 Hz, inducido a la rama con impacto de varillas rígidas de fibra de vidrio que se mueven a una amplitud constante de 2 mm. Los datos sobre la aceleración se recopilaron utilizando un acelerómetro fijado a la rama. La frecuencia de 20 Hz presentó la máxima transmisibilidad. Las muestras que contenían frutas maduras también presentaron una alta transmisibilidad en comparación con las que contenían frutas inmaduras.

Abstract The development of efficient machines for coffee harvesting requires solid knowledge about the dynamic behavior of the plant. Vibration transmissibility is a parameter on dynamic behavior that may help understand this process. The aim of this study was to evaluate the average vibration transmissibility in coffee fruit-peduncle-branch samples containing unripe and ripe fruits. The experiments were performed using Arabica coffee plants of the cultivar Catuaí Vermelho. The samples were submitted to three vibration frequency levels, 20, 30 and 40 Hz, induced to the branch with impact of rigid fiberglass rods moving at a constant amplitude 2 mm. Data on acceleration were collected using an accelerometer fixed to the branch. The frequency of 20 Hz presented the highest transmissibility. Samples containing ripe fruits also presented high transmissibility when compared to those containing unripe fruits.

RESUMO. Métodos de implementação numérica, como o método de elementos finitos, podem ser empregados em projetos de máquinas a fim de estudar o comportamento dinâmico da planta. Como parâmetros de entrada para utilização do método de elementos finitos, devem ser informadas as propriedades geométricas, físicas e mecânicas do sistema em estudo. Objetivou-se neste trabalho determinar as propriedades geométricas, físicas e mecânicas da ráquis de macaúba, nos estádios de maturação de frutos verdes com idade de 180 dias e maduros. O teor de água foi calculado através do método de estufa de 105 ± 3°C por 24h, as dimensões foram determinadas com o auxilio de trena e paquímetro, as massas e os volumes mensurados, empregando-se balança digital e proveta, respectivamente. O módulo de elasticidade da ráquis foi determinado por meio de ensaios mecânicos de compressão. Os coeficientes de Poisson foram determinados pelas deformações longitudinais e transversais de corpos de provas oriundos da ráquis. Concluiu-se que os módulos de elasticidade das ráquis no estádio de maturação verde foram superiores aos valores para o estádio maduro de maturação.

ABSTRACT. Numerical implementation methods such as the finite element method can be used in machine design to study the dynamic behavior of the plant. Input parameters for using the finite element method should be set based on the geometrical, physical and mechanical system under study. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine the mechanical properties of the rachis of macaw palm in the green maturation stage at an age of 180 days and at fruit maturation. The water content was calculated using the oven method of 105 ± 3°C for 24 hours. The modulus of elasticity for the rachis was determined by means of mechanical compression testing. The Poisson's ratios were determined from the results of the longitudinal and transverse deformation of rachis test bodies. The shear tests were performed in two scenarios. In the first one, a blade was used without a tensioner, and in the second scenario, a blade was fixed with a tensioner, characterized by a chamfer at 45°. It was concluded that the modulus of elasticity of macaw palm rachis in the green maturity stage was higher than the values for the mature stage of ripeness.

RESUMO Propriedades mecânicas do sistema fruto-ráquila de macaúba O fruto da palmeira nativa macaúba [Acrocomia aculeata (lacq) Lood. ex Mart] é uma alternativa para a produção de biodiesel devido às características da planta, como sua adaptabilidade, rusticidade e alta produção de óleo vegetal. Contudo, sua exploração ainda é extrativista e há grandes dificuldades em sua colheita. Objetivou-se determinar as propriedades mecânicas do sistema fruto-ráquila de macaúba que servirão de suporte aos projetos de máquinas para colheita por vibração mecânica. Foram utilizadas dez amostras de quatro acessos, nos estádios de maturação imaturo e maduro. Ensaios de tração e vibração foram realizados para determinar as propriedades mecânicas do sistema fruto-ráquila. O módulo de elasticidade obtido para a ráquila foi de 188,39-385,09 MPa para o estádio imaturo e 109,02-320,54 MPa para o maduro. A razão de Poisson para a ráquila ficou entre 0,20 e 0,52 para o estádio imaturo e entre 0,16 e 0,52 para o maduro. A razão de amortecimento encontrada variou entre 0,02 e 0,12 para o estádio imaturo e entre 0,06 e 0,12 para o maduro. O sistema fruto-ráquila foi caracterizado como subamortecido.

ABSTRACT The fruit of the native macaw palm [Acrocomia aculeata (lacq) Lood. ex Mart] is an alternative for biodiesel production because of the plant characteristics, as well as its adaptability, hardiness and high vegetable oil yield. However, its exploitation remains extractive and there are significant difficulties in its harvest. This study aimed to determine the mechanical properties of the macaw palm fruit-rachilla system that will support the design of harvest machines based on mechanical vibration. Ten samples of four accessions in the immature and mature stages of maturity were used. Traction and vibration tests were conducted to determine the mechanical properties of the macaw palm fruit-rachilla system. The elastic modulus of the rachilla was 188.39-385.09 MPa for the immature stage and 109.02-320.54 MPa for the mature stage. The Poisson's ratio for the rachilla varied between 0.20 and 0.52 for the immature stage and between 0.16 and 0.52 for the mature stage. The damping ratio varied between 0.02 and 0.12 for the immature stage and between 0.06 and 0.12 for the mature stage. The fruit-rachilla system was characterized as underdamped.

RESUMO: A macaúba tem sido apontada como uma das principais matérias-primas para a indústria de biodiesel nas próximas décadas. No entanto, não existem máquinas para colheita ou destacamento dos frutos na usina e o estudo do comportamento dinâmico do sistema fruto-ráquila nortearia o desenvolvimento dessas máquinas. Dessa forma, objetivou-se determinar o módulo de elasticidade e a razão de amortecimento de quatro acessos provindos do Banco Ativo de Germoplasma da UFV. Foi realizado teste de tração para determinar o módulo de elasticidade. A partir dos resultados obtidos na forma gráfica, tensão versus deformação específica, foi determinado o módulo de elasticidade pelo método da tangente. Para determinar a razão de amortecimento, foi empregado o método do decremento logarítmico, realizado por meio de teste de vibração. O teste de vibração constituiu-se de um impulso para excitar o sistema. A aquisição das informações geradas foi realizada por meio de acelerômetro piezelétrico. O módulo de elasticidade médio ficou entre 2,22 e 3,17MPa e as razões de amortecimento médias ficaram entre 0,04 e 0,08. Concluiu-se que o sistema fruto-ráquila da macaúba é subamortecido.

ABSTRACT: The macaw palm has been identified as a prime feed stock for biodiesel industries in the near future coming decades. However, there are no machines for harvesting and detaching fruits in the biofuel industry; hence, the study of the dynamic behavior of the fruit-rachilla system would aid in the development of such machines. Thus, this study seeks to determine the modulus of elasticity and the damping ratio of four different plant accessions obtained from the Active Germplasm Bank of the Universidade Federal de Viçosa (UFV). Tensile testing was conducted to determine the modulus of elasticity. From the graphical results of tension versus specific strain, it was possible to determine the modulus of elasticity by using the tangent method. To determine the damping ratio, the logarithmic decrement method was performed using vibration testing. Vibration test consisted of a generated impulse of 100% of the amplitude of acceleration that was used to excite the system. The acquisition of the generated information was performed by a piezoelectric accelerometer. The average modulus of elasticity ranged from 2.22 to 3.17MPa, and the average damping ratios ranged from 0.04 to 0.08. Thus, the macaw fruit-rachilla was an under-damped system.

Resumo: Objetivou-se avaliar o efeito do hipoclorito de sódio na retirada da sarcotesta e no processo germinativo de sementes de mamão recém-extraídas, previamente armazenadas, antes e após armazenamento por 44 dias. Foram avaliados nove tratamentos segundo delineamento inteiramente casualizado, sendo seis tratamentos no esquema de parcelas subdivididas e três tratamentos adicionais (controles). As parcelas foram constituídas pelos métodos para quebra de dormência: M1 - Método da Peneira + Secagem a 7%; M2 - Método da Peneira + Secagem a 7% + NaOCl; e M3 - NaOCl + Secagem a 7%. As subparcelas pelo tempo de armazenamento (zero e 44 dias). Os três tratamentos adicionais consistiram em: A - NaOCl a 6% por 12 horas; B - Método da Peneira e C - Sementes intactas em 24 horas em água corrente. Avaliou-se o teste de germinação e a primeira contagem do teste de germinação. O uso do hipoclorito de sódio é eficiente para retirar a sarcotesta, porém afeta negativamente a germinação. O armazenamento por 44 dias é prejudicial à germinação. A remoção da sarcotesta pelo método da peneira, seguida da secagem até 7% de teor de água foi eficiente para propiciar a germinação das sementes de mamão.

Abstract: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of sodium hypochlorite on removal of the sarcotesta and the germination process of newly harvested papaya seeds before and after storage for 44 days. Nine treatments were evaluated using a completely randomized design with six treatments in a split plot arrangement and three additional treatments (control), each treatment with eight replications. The plots consisted of methods for breaking dormancy: M1 - sieve method + drying to 7%, M2 - sieve method + drying to 7% + NaOCl, and M3 - NaOCl + drying to 7%. The split plots consisted of different storage periods (0 and 44 days). The three additional treatments consisted of A - NaOCl at 6% for 12 hours, B - sieve method, and C - intact seeds in running water for 24 hours. Germination and the first count of germination were evaluated. Results showed that sodium hypochlorite is effective in removal of the sarcotesta, but there is a negative effect on germination. Storage for 44 days also had a negative effect on germination. Removal of the sarcotesta by the sieve method followed by drying to 7% moisture content was effective in promoting germination of papaya seeds.

Resumo: A sarcotesta, camada mucilaginosa presente nas sementes de mamão, afeta negativamente o seu processo germinativo e sua retirada tem sido realizada manualmente. O uso do hipoclorito de sódio pode ser uma alternativa à remoção manual da sarcotesta. Objetivou-se avaliar o efeito de diferentes concentrações de cloro ativo (0, 2, 4, 6 e 8%), durante 24 horas de imersão, em diferentes proporções (10:200, 50:200, 100:200, 200:200, 300:200, 400:200, 500:200 e 600:200) entre sementes (número) e volume (mL) da solução de hipoclorito de sódio respectivamente, visando identificar a melhor combinação para a retirada efetiva da sarcotesta de maneira a contribuir no processo germinativo. Foram avaliados o teste de germinação e a primeira contagem. Empregou-se o delineamento estatístico inteiramente casualizado com quatro repetições. Para as variáveis quantitativas, que apresentaram efeito significativo pelo teste F a 5% de probabilidade, foi realizada a análise de regressão. A imersão de sementes de mamão na proporção de 10 sementes por 200 mL de solução de NaOCl (10:200, ou seja, 20 mL de solução por semente), na concentração de 2% de cloro ativo por 24 horas, pode ser uma alternativa para a retirada da sarcotesta em sementes recém-colhidas, pois, além da retirada efetiva da sarcotesta, favorece a germinação.

Abstract: Sarcotesta, a mucilaginous layer found in papaya seeds, negatively affects the germination of papaya seeds and its removal has been manually performed. The use of sodium hypochlorite can be an alternative to manual removal of sarcotesta in papaya seeds. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of different active chlorine concentrations (0, 2, 4, 6 and 8%) during 24 hours of immersion, in different proportions (10:200, 50:200, 100:200, 200:200, 300:200, 400:200, 500:200 and 600:200) of seeds number and solution volume (mL) to identify the best combination for an effective remotion of sarcotesta to improve the germination process. Germination test and first count were performed. A completely randomized design with four replications was used. Regression analysis was performed for quantitative variables with significant effect by F-test at 5% probability. Papaya seeds immersion in the ratio of 10 seeds per 200 mL of NaOCl solution (10:200, i.e. 20 mL of solution per seed), at a 2% sodium hypochlorite concentration during 24 hours of imbibition, can be used as an alternative for sarcotesta remotion for freshly harvested papaya seeds, because besides the effective remotion of sarcotesta, this technique improves the germination process.

RESUMO O desenvolvimento de máquinas eficientes para a colheita mecanizada do cafeeiro exige a utilização de parâmetros vibracionais adequados. Assim, para um menor desprendimento de frutos verdes, repasse, quebra de galhos e desfolha, devem ser utilizados magnitudes de frequência, amplitude e tempo de vibração adequados. Objetivou-se analisar a eficiência de derriça de frutos de cafeeiro, em função de parâmetros vibracionais e estádio de maturação. Cachos de frutos foram amostrados nos estádios de maturação verde e cereja e submetidos à vibração, utilizando-se um sistema composto por um gerador de sinais, um amplificador e uma máquina vibratória eletromagnética. Os ensaios foram realizados combinando-se diferentes frequências (16,4 Hz; 20,3 Hz; 24 Hz; 25,6 Hz; 30,0 Hz; e 33,0 Hz), amplitudes (5,0 mm; 7,0 mm; e 9,0 mm) e tempos de vibração (10,0 s e 20,0 s). Os tempos de vibração empregados não influenciaram na eficiência de derriça. Houve tendência de a eficiência de derriça dos frutos cerejas ser superior à dos frutos verdes. A eficiência de derriça aumentou à medida que se aumentou a frequência e a amplitude de vibração.

ABSTRACT The development of efficient machines for the mechanical harvesting of coffee plants requires the use of appropriate vibrational parameters. Thus, in order to detach less unripe fruits and decrease reharvesting, branch breakage and defoliation, it is important to choose the appropriate frequency, amplitude and vibration time. This study aimed at analyzing the detachment efficiency of fruits from coffee plants according to vibrational parameters and ripening stage. Fruit bunches were sampled at the green and mature stages and subjected to vibration, using a system composed by a signal generator, an amplifier and an electromagnetic vibrating machine. Tests combined different frequencies (16.4 Hz, 20.3 Hz, 24 Hz, 25.6 Hz, 30.0 Hz and 33.0 Hz), amplitudes (5.0 mm, 7.0 mm and 9.0 mm) and vibration times (10.0 s and 20.0 s). The vibration times did not affect the detachment efficiency. There was a trend for higher detachment efficiency in mature fruits than in green fruits. The detachment efficiency increased with increasing vibration frequency and amplitude.

Resumo Embora a produção mundial de mamão seja elevada, o tegumento das sementes, denominado sarcotesta, ainda representa um entrave no processo de produção de mudas. Este trabalho foi desenvolvido com o objetivo de viabilizar a retirada da sarcotesta de sementes de mamão visando a produção de mudas. Para tal, foram desenvolvidos dois ensaios. No primeiro, as sementes foram imersas em diferentes concentrações de cloro ativo (0, 2, 4, 6 e 8%) na proporção de 600:200, sementes/mL de solução respectivamente, além do estudo de sementes intactas e sementes submetidas ao método da peneira + água parada. No segundo, as sementes foram imersas em cloro ativo a 2% em diferentes proporções (10:200; 200:200; 400:200 e 600:200), além da concentração 0% na proporção 10:200 e o método da peneira + água parada. O efeito dos tratamentos foi avaliado pelo teste de germinação e por meio da microscopia eletrônica de varredura. O hipoclorito de sódio não removeu totalmente a sarcotesta, mas proveu danos à sua estrutura. Na proporção de 10:200 na concentração de 2% de cloro ativo por 24 horas, o endosperma e o embrião não foram afetados, resultando em uma germinação de 80%, podendo ser uma alternativa à retirada manual da sarcotesta.

Although papaya world production is high, the integument of papaya seeds, called sarcotesta, is an obstacle in the seedling production process. The aim of this work was to develop techniques to facilitate the removal of papaya seed sarcotesta for seedlings production. For that, two assays were developed. For the first one, the seeds were immersed in different concentrations of active chlorine (0, 2, 4, 6 and 8%) at ratio 600:200 seeds/mL of solution, respectively, besides the study of intact seeds and seeds subjected to the sieve method + stagnant water. For the second one, the seeds were immersed in active chlorine 2% in different ratios (10: 200; 200: 200; 400: 200 and 600: 200), and the concentration of 0% at ratio 10:200 and the sieve method + stagnant water. The effect of the treatments was evaluated by germination test and scanning electron microscopy. Sodium hypochlorite did not remove completely sarcotesta, but damaged it. In ratio 10:200 in a concentration of 2% of active chlorine for 24 hours, the embryo and the endosperm were not affected, resulting in 80% of germination, which can be an alternative to sarcotesta manual removal.

As perdas na colheita mecanizada de tomate industrial, dependendo dos níveis atingidos, podem reduzir consideravelmente a produtividade das áreas plantadas. Dentro desse contexto, este estudo objetivou avaliar o efeito da regulagem do sistema de separação rotativo nas perdas observadas durante a realização da colheita mecanizada. O delineamento estatístico utilizado foi inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial, com quatro repetições, onde cada parcela consistiu da combinação de três níveis de rotação (6 rpm, 12 rpm e 18 rpm) e três frequências de vibração (0,83 Hz, 2,50 Hz e 4,17 Hz) do sistema de separação. As perdas contabilizadas foram divididas em perdas nas ramas, perdas de frutos no solo e perdas totais. Cartas sequenciais e cartas de controle para valores individuais e de amplitude móveis, compostas pelos limites superior e inferior de controle e média, foram utilizadas como ferramentas de controle estatístico de processo. Os resultados indicaram que as perdas totais ocasionadas encontram-se fora dos limites de controle e dos padrões aceitáveis para a cultura do tomate industrial. A adoção de maiores vibrações e rotações do sistema de separação da colhedora proporcionaram maior eficiência de colheita.

Losses in the mechanical harvesting of industrial tomatoes, depending on the levels reached, may considerably reduce the yield of the planted areas. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of settings of the rotary separation system on losses observed during the mechanized harvesting process. The statistical design was completely randomized, in a factorial scheme with four replications, where each plot consisted of the combination of three rotation levels (6 rpm, 24 rpm and 18 rpm) with three vibration frequencies (0.83 Hz, 2.50 Hz and 4.17 Hz) from the separation system. The recorded losses were divided into branch losses, fruit losses on the soil and total losses. Sequential and control charts for individual values and variable ranges composed by the upper and lower limits of control and average were used as a tool of statistical process control. The results showed that the total losses incurred are outside the control limits and acceptable standards for industrial tomato crops. The use of higher levels of rotation and vibration in the harvester separation system provided a higher harvest efficiency.

Tendo em vista a importância dos modelos matemáticos no desenvolvimento e análise de sistemas de secagem, além do conhecimento e necessidade de desenvolver interfaces de modo a aprimorar a acessibilidade e uso destes modelos, este trabalho visou: a) implementar o modelo de Thompson de modo a simular a secagem de grãos a altas temperaturas; b) desenvolver uma linguagem apropriada para gerar sistemas de secagem; e c) desenvolver uma interface gráfica com o objetivo de facilitar o entendimento do usuário, utilizando-se a linguagem Visual Basic 6.0. O programa computacional LINSEC, demonstrou uma alta efetividade na simulação de secagem, fornecendo valores próximos à realidade. É flexível e de fácil utilização pelo usuário durante a simulação para diferentes tipos de secadores.

Considering the importance of mathematical models in the development and analysis of grain drying systems, and understanding the need to develop interfaces that will improve the accessibility of these models, this work aimed to: a) implement the Thompson model to simulate grain drying at high temperatures; b) develop an appropriate language to generate drying models; and c) develop a graphical interface with the goal of facilitating user understanding. Thus the computational program LINSEC that was created using the programming language Visual Basic 6.0. LINSEC was highly effective for the modeling and simulation of drying systems and in providing simulated values close to reality. LINSEC is highly flexible and user-friendly during the modeling of several types of dryers.

A agricultura de precisão baseada nas propriedades físicas e químicas do solo exige uma amostragem densa para se determinar a variabilidade espacial no campo. Essa amostragem densa, muitas vezes apresenta custo e tempo consumido elevado. Uma das técnicas para reduzir o número de amostras é definir zonas de manejo em função de informações coletadas no campo. Alguns pesquisadores têm demonstrado a importância desempenhada pelas variáveis elétricas do solo para definir zonas de manejo. Dessa forma, este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a relação entre a variabilidade espacial da condutividade elétrica aparente e propriedades do solo em regiões de produção de cafés de montanha. A condutividade elétrica foi medida no perfil de solo de 0,00-0,20 m (CE20) e 0,00-0,40 m (CE40) usando um sensor portátil. Os valores de CE20 e CE40 foram de 1,80 mS m-1 e 1,22 mS m-1, respectivamente. Ambas CE20 e CE40 apresentaram baixa correlação com as propriedades químicas e a textura do solo, sendo que, a correlação mais elevada foi obtida para o fósforo remanescente com valores de 0,427 e 0,465, respectivamente.

Precision agriculture that is based on the physical and chemical properties of soil requires a dense sampling to evaluate spatial variability in the field. This dense sampling is often expensive and time consuming. One technique to reduce the number of samples is to define management zones based on information that is collected in the field. Some researchers have demonstrated the importance of the electrical properties of soil in defining management zones. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between the apparent soil electrical conductivity and soil properties in mountainous areas of coffee production. The electrical conductivity of soil was evaluated at soil depths ranging from 0.00-0.20 m (EC20) and 0.00-0.40 m (EC40) using a portable meter. The mean values of EC20 and EC40 were 1.80 mS m-1 and 1.22 mS m-1, respectively. Both EC20 and EC40 exhibited comparatively low correlations with the soil properties, whereas higher correlations were obtained for measurements of remaining phosphorus, wherein values of 0.427 and 0.465, respectively, were obtained.
